- What are the Civil Service Veterans Preference Requirements?
Chapter 127 of Public Law 2000 provides that the Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs shall determine the status of veterans in certain cases, including civil service veterans preference. The law was effective on March 1, 2001 and transferred this responsibility from the Department of Personnel to the Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs. DOP no longer handles civil service veterans preference claims.
Under this law, the Adjutant General of the Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs has the responsibility for determining whether an individual meets the criteria to be considered a "veteran" or "disabled veteran" for the purpose of receiving civil service preference. The Adjutant General is also responsible for all appeals of the above determinations. The law requires the Adjutant General promptly to notify the Department of Personnel of these determinations. They are binding on the Department of Personnel.
Note: A claim for veterans preference can only be honored with the provision of your social security number. To see which military conflicts qualify a candidate for civil service veterans preference, click here http://www.state.nj.us/military/veterans/preference.html.
To obtain a Civil Service Veterans Preference claim form, click here http://www.state.nj.us/military/veterans/njdmava_form_05A-1.pdf (PDF 219K).

- When will I get the test results for the Police entrance examination?
Your test results will be mailed to the last address you provided for your application (please refer to Change of Address for instructions on updating your records). Although we strive to generate test results within six weeks from date of examination, availability of test results may take longer depending on the type of examination. Also, if the selection process entails the use of multiple examination components, notification of test results is delayed until all test parts are scheduled, administered, and scored. Law Enforcement Examination (LEE) candidates are advised at the test center, as to when they should expect to receive their test results. A "Notification of Eligibility" means that you passed a test; it does not mean that you have been certified to the position or that you will be hired.

- If I receive A "Notification of Certification" from the Department of Personnel what does this mean?
A "Notification of Certification" means that your name has been provided to a hiring agency and you may have an opportunity to be considered for a specific job if you follow the instructions printed on the notice. Although you may have successfully moved through the application and examination process, you may not necessarily be certified or offered a job right away. Several factors impact on when you might be contacted by the hiring agency about a job offer; for example, your rank on the list, the number of existing vacancies to be filled, and the existence of any previous lists. Additionally, some vacancy postings are issued in anticipation of vacancies rather than in reaction to them. As a result, the time between receiving your test results and receiving a Notification of Certification can vary from almost immediately to several months to one year or more. Once you receive your Notification of Certification, you must follow the directions printed on both sides of the form to remain under consideration for employment.
