That Japanese Pitcher

Does anyone else think that bid by the Red Sox was just one of the biggest wastes of 51 million dollars in the history of the world, or what?

"The Boston Red Sox cannot reduce their $51.1 million bid for Daisuke Matsuzaka in order to sign him, even if his Japanese team agrees to take less, baseball officials said Tuesday."

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

The Yankees bid $25M for Kei Igawa. He led his league in strikeouts 3 of the last 4 years, but projects as a #4 or #5 starter here. Matsuzaka is going to be one of the best pitchers in the Majors. The Yankees overbid more than the Red Sox did.

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

It seems to me that we never know whether a pitcher is going to be good or not, regardless of surefire indicators.

Remember how much Hideki Irabu sucked?

If this new guy is merely good, $51 million will have been too much.

That Japanese Pitcher

He's going to be one the best pitchers in baseball? What proof do you have?

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

Ask any scout and he'll tell you the same. 4 plus pitches and command of all of them. The fastball and curve are both 70 pitches. He changes speeds with all his pitches. He's both a strikeout pitcher and a groundball pitcher. This country has never seen the likes of Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

Ask any scout 8 years ago about Hideki Irabu and they'd say the same ****. I'm not saying he won't be good. But he won't be among the best in the next couple years.

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

Well, let me ask you this:

Has he ever pitched a ball and ran behind the plate in time to catch it for a strike?

Has he ever pitched a ball, fielded it off the bat, thrown it to first and ran to first so fast that he caught his own throw for a *******

Has he ever let all the fielders lay down at the beginning of an inning and not had a single one of them get up until the inning was over?

If not, then he is not as good as Satchel Paige!

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

Wow, it was *******

You know, like when an infielder throws the ball to first base and records a *******

I wonder why it was - oh wait, I've got it.

"Hey, I've heard he is a bit of a 'hot date'"

"Oh yeah? So you think he'll put out?"

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

Hideki Irabu had control problems in Japan. Matsuzaka has had none. Matsuzaka also had better strikeout numbers. Whether you're a traditional talent evaluator or a stat head, you've got to acknowledge that Matsuzaka is a special player.

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

Funny conversation, this one. Looks like the scouts had Dice-K right, while understating the case for Igawa.

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

He's very talented, but I'm not sold on his 2.98 ERA. His walk rate is still through the roof, and his FIP is over 4.

Re: That Japanese Pitcher

His K/G has also dropped and BB/G is up from last year, while his ERA is way down. His LOB% is also up. I think he's going to be closer to the pitcher he was last year unless he solves his control issues.

His stuff moves like no other pitcher I've seen. I actually can't figure out why his strikeout rate isn't higher.
