I was as wrong as the day is long.
The Red Sox actually traded Manny. I never imagined it possible. I think I am eating some considerable crow here. |

They got Bay, though. He's cheaper, is under contract for 09, and less of an idiot. He is also almost as good as Manny is, now. Now we'll see if he can hit .900 against the Yankees. |

But to get him, they not only gave up Ramirez but Moss AND Hanson AND they're paying his salary. At least that's what I read. If it's true then that's one helluva price to pay. |

The Red Sox are under incredible pressure to win NOW. Giving up good prospects to keep their playoff juggernaut running is part of the game when you're in Boston or New York. |

This move puts them one step closer to being the Yankees, doesn't it. Their mix of veterans they got from other teams and players they developed themselves is very similar to the Yankees of the mid-to-late 1990s. I wonder if their teams of the next decade will resemble the Yankees teams of this decade - emphasis on players developed by other teams, not so much of developing their own players. |

What they're paying for the rest of '08 and '09 is much less than what they would have paid to keep Manny for both of those years. I will look more closely at what the Pirates got shortly, but for now, I am just excited to see what Bay does in Fenway with Papi hitting behind him. |
