Griffey
Griffey is playing centerfield tonight at Kauffman Stadium. The Sox didn't give up anything for him, so it's not a terrible trade, but I can not believe they're going to put Griffey in center. I've already bought two tickets to watch his first game in a Sox uniform at US Cellular Field Tuesday... and I really, really hope he doesn't get hurt between now and then. Not an exaggerated concern, either. |

I didn't think it was a bad trade. Just odd from both perspectives. |

The Sox didn't give up anything, but it is going to be painful to watch Griffey "play" centerfield. |

It is kind of weird that the white sox had a mediocre offensive player who isn't terribly great on defense and then decided to remedy that by getting Griffey. As hard a time as I gave Kenny Williams for the Aaron Rowand-Jim Thome deal, at least that deal made sense on SOME level. This deal makes no sense on any level. Of sons of former major leaguers playing for the Reds in 2008, Jerry Hairston, Jr., is having a much better year than Ken Griffey, Jr., and probably would have been a much better acquisition. |

And, I am pretty sure that this team would have been in a better position if they'd called Kenny Lofton about dusting off his cleats. |

Speaking of Hairston's. Scott Hairston this year - 17 HR, 31 RBI. 23 of his 31 RBI (in 290 AB) have scored by way of his HRs. |

Thanks Rich! I love that sort of thing, and I totally have overlooked Hairston this season. |

Interestingly, this year S Hairston has 0 HR against the Giants and is batting just .103. Prior to this year, he was a career .280 hitter against them and had hit 9 of his 24 career HR versus SF including 7 of 11 last year. The 9 HR are more than double his career total versus any other team. It's difficult for that reason for me to overlook him. |

Here's another gem of a stat I picked up when the Giants played the Pads this weekend. San Diego had all of 1 stolen base in the month of July. Just 1 single stolen base. Who stole it? Greg Maddux of course. |

That is a great note on the Pads. I still think that Richar could have something to offer, given his age. And by the transitive property, they gave up Aaron Cunningham and Brandon McCarthy for Griffey. One thing we know for sure is that they are spending around $5 million for two months of KGO, so I wouldn't say this cost them nothing. |

But the odd thing about that move from the Reds perspective is that they already have a much better player than Richar. |

Richar sucks. |

Griffey is just awful in centerfield. |
