I wanted to get your guys opinion on...
the pitcher hitting 8th versus 9th. What do you favor? |

In my opinion, batting the pitcher eighth is a bad idea as a general rule, with narrow exceptions: a) You have a super-duper star who you want to hit third so he bats in the first inning but who you want to try to fill the bases ahead of in the later innings; b) Carlos Zambrano is your pitcher and Brad Ausmus or Jose Molina is your catcher; or c) You have a guy like Alfonso Soriano - who has never done well batting anywhere other than leadoff, but who has a lot of power - batting leadoff for your team. Generally speaking, with a league average lineup, I wouldn't do it. |

Yeah, but you just picked extreme cases. I'm in favor of batting the pitcher 8th. A lot of people aruge against it by saying "what if he comes up with the bases loaded and two outs" True, but doesn't that happen when he is hitting 9th as well? Maybe not as often since your 4 and 5 batters probably get on base more than 5 and 6 but I think thats splitting hairs. The average obp for a NL batter this year is .336. I'm assuming the average 8th hitter has an obp of let says .320. I would imagine that is at least 70 points higher than the average pitcher, I'm just in favor of having a "second leadoff" batter. |

I somehow read those as an argument against the pitcher batting 8th. |

Ned Yost has become a very compelling manager to watch. Tony LaRussa-compelling. Batting Kendall 8th, ruining Yovani Gallardo's career, platooning the 5th starter based on home/road splits, defending using CC for 130 pitches because they are low-stress innings... his team will be fun to watch in the postseason. |
