Yeah, that's a good one to bring up the next time an old-timer talks about how silly and useless pitch counts are. |

Well, for what its worth, I only checked Koufax because Ryan said recently that he threw as many as 242 pitches in a game once. There are no pitch counts for Ryan before 1989, but the Dodgers kept pitch counts in the 1950s and 1960s, so those numbers are there. Point being - not having a pitch count certainly didn't hurt Ryan. |

There are several pitchers who have had abusive pitch counts and not suffered for it. I seem to recall hearing that Juan Marichal once threw 289 pitches in a game. But you know, I can fire bullets at a pitcher and it might not hurt his career. That doesn't mean it's a smart thing to do. |
