HIJAB SUPPORT GROUP BY HIJABS FOR YOU

As-Salamu Alaikum

Welcome to our Hijab Forum. Feel free to post a message. This Forum was created as a support group for Muslimahs. If you have any questiosn or comments and want support or answers from other Muslimahs you can post them in this forum. I am not vouching to have all the answers to anyones questions but as I get plenty of e-mails from muslimahs with problems on the job with hijab or her family is muslim but does not want her to cover I decided that a forum support group would benefit them as well as other muslimahs who have been through the same thing or are dealing with that issues that I did not have to deal with. Your advice, experience, or knowledge can help another muslimah along the way of the straight path.

Ma Salam

tell parents about hijab??

Assalamu Alaykum! I converted to Islam about seven years ago - and have just recently decided to start wearing hijab. I am married and me and my husband live in a different city from my parents - about forty minutes far from them. I haven't felt completely satisfied with my hijab experience because I haven't told my parents yet. They are christian and I am afraid they will disapprove. They didn't approve of my conversion, but they have gotten over it. I love hijab and everything about it - and I've found that I've had lots of questions from friends and coworkers regarding the hijab since I've started wearing it. I've noticed that people just don't get it. I guess I had this preconceived idea that once I explained hijab to them, a light would come on in their head and they would be like "oh! yeah! that's wonderful!" But that never has happened. People just kind of laugh about it and think it's silly.
My point is this: How should I tell my parents?? I know why I love wearing hijab - but I don't think they'll get it.
Any ideas or suggestions? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

Re: tell parents about hijab??

Melanie,

I only came across this forum tonight. You may have already resolved your issue with telling your parents. If not, here are a few ideas from another convert...

Line up some friends to support you. You may need a shoulder to cry on. (I hope not, but best to have support)

If you have already hinted to your parents that you really want to wear hijab, it may go better.

Try fasting on a preferred day to gather strength and patience. The next day, go see your parents in person while wearing hijab.

Your parents may get angry and argue. Let them argue, just keep your patience and be respectful. After a few hours, they should run out of things to say (for that day). If you have any strength left, then try to get them to go out with you in public.

Please keep in mind, that the disagreement that your parents may have with you will not disappear right away. If it does, congratulations! :)

Strength, courage and patience from Allah will help you greatly.

Re: tell parents about hijab??

I think Anonymous gave you a great suggestion. your parents are goig to definitely go through shock and dissappointment first but after that they will learn to get use to it. My mother has been muslim for over 35 years now and my Grandmother will still make christian comments to her knowing her beliefs and what Islaam is really about. So deef inside it will probably always bother them but they will learn to love and accept your decision to hijab whether they agree with it or not.
