Let's try this again...

Well, since the last thing I posted in hopes of getting everyone talking (typing) hasn't quite lived up to my expectations I thought I would try one more time. So how about this...

"What is your favorite Carl Riggle moment?"

It can be funny, serious, something he has taught you directly or indirectly, etc. I think we all have missed Carl terribly lately, so maybe this will be a way to ease that just a tiny bit. And I know everyone who knows him has a memorable Carl moment. Also, if we get enough responses, I would love to print them out and take them to him. So don't respond for me. Do it for Carl!!!

Re: Let's try this again...

Looking back over the years, I can’t remember one specific “Carl Riggle Memory”, but several images come to mind. First thing I want to mention is that every time I see Carl I think of my Grandad. Not only do they look alike, but they act alike as well. Also think of how no matter how tired Carl may be he is always willing to lend a hand, do hard work for another (we could all learn a lesson from that). Last thing I remember is Carl crying. You can always count on Carl to genuinely care about your feelings. I truly believe he takes whatever one person is feeling upon him.

(By the way, I had left a post on the first attempt of trying to get people to talk. I guess it didn’t actually post.)

Re: Let's try this again...

I remember when we had the evening fellowships hosted by the different classes, there was one that was hosted by the nursery. One of the kids had brought a bag of jelly beans and Carl told people if they didn't eat one, he would shove one up their nose. I also remember when me and Sarah first started at Pollardand my grandmother died, Carl was the only person from church to show up at the viewing. It was VBS week and he was driving the van and came before he picked anyone up. He always cared and thought about everyone before himself and thats one of the things that made him so special.

Carl taught me that no matter what happens in life God is in control. Always meet life and people with a hug and a smile. With God's help anything is possible.

Re: Let's try this again...

I have so many fond memories of Carl. How welcomed he made my mom and I when we first started coming to Pollard, years ago. How he always genuinely cares about all ages. Him playing croquett with us in Layne and Evie's backyard! His compassion and love for all, is something we should all strive toward. He works, when he doesn't feel like working. Mostly, I remember when I was a teenager and scared to get up in front of everyone to sing. I could always count on looking at Carl, before the first note I knew God had already touched someones heart through me.

Re: Let's try this again...

I guess it's not fair for me to expect responses when I haven't offered one myself, so here are some of my favorite Carl Riggle moments.

First, one of the many lessons Carl has taught me is that if you can make someone smile or laugh for even a second than you have ministered to them in a mighty way. And oh, how many times has Carl made me laugh even on bad days! He is so quick-witted and I have always admired his sense of humor which he balances with an unbelievably tender heart. I've always said he is the only person I know who can insult someone (jokingly, of course) and get kissed for it instead of getting slapped.

One particular moment that seems to stick out in my mind when I think of Carl is when he dumped a bucket of water over Bro. J. R. Hume's head while we were on a youth retreat at the beach in 1991. And then I remember him taking off out of our condo and fleeing down the beach with a much younger J. R. in pursuit. J. R. never did catch him.

I remember Carl being the first one to greet and hug me after I was baptized at Pollard and with tears in his eyes he whispered in my ear, "If I can ever do anything for you, just let me know." And though I barely knew him then, somehow I knew he meant every word he said.

And the guy is fearless!!! I remember him crawling out on a narrow board which was precariously laid on and extending well past the end of some scaffolding high above the ground when a group of men were painting the pillars in the front of the church. He was shaking, it was shaking and bouncing, and I was shaking just watching him from the ground. But he didn't show one ounce of fear or hesitation and somehow avoided what should have been a terrible accident.

But I think one of the most touching Carl moments came just last year on the day of our annual Christmas dinner in December. It was a cold afternoon and snow was flying outside. At this point Carl was far from well himself, but I later read in an email from Sue Jenkins that after he left church that afternoon he drove all the way out to Kitts Hill, Ohio to deliver a plate of food to her husband, Frank, who at that time was recovering from a broken leg. Most of us, myself included, would not likely even think of doing such a selfless thing. But even if we did we would likely let the whole world know about it. Not Carl. He embodies true charity. No one would ever have known about the sacrifice he made that day had Sue not informed us about it. It kind of makes you wonder how many other wonderful things he has done for each of us and so many others of which we aren't even aware.

Re: Let's try this again...

Wow...so many things come to mind when I think of Carl. He is an amazing individual that God has truly used as an insturment. I could go on for days about how many times Carl has touched my life, but one particular thing that comes to mind was he got me back to Pollard after my granny Sue Sue died.

Most of you all know that it was a rough time for me and Uriah when Granny got sick. We didnt really get to get out much and be kids so to say because we were at home taking care of her. I used to come all the time on Wednesdays and Sundays with Miss Elsie Caldwell, but when Granny got sick, this stopped.

After Granny died, it was a rough road because things at home werent the greatest. I didnt want to come back to church. Habits are hard to break, and once you get used to not doing something, you dont want to do it again most of the time. Believe me...this is still something I stuggle with all the time.

I remember it all started with a phone call...Carl called us up and to see if we would come to church. And to be honest, I wasnt planning on coming but to make Carl happy, Uriah and I both made it on a Wednesday. Then instead of a phone call, we got a visit from good ol Carl. So you better believe come Sunday we were back. I dont know really what would have come of me had Carl not stay on our case about coming to church. I am grateful he did :)

Re: Let's try this again...

When I first saw this question, there were so many thoughts that came to mind of Carl that I couldn't choose just one. Then on Friday we went to Louisa to hear J.R. Hume preach and we found Carl and Mary there! Mary said Carl was having a rough day. He wasn't able to say much to us when we came in or when we left. He just smiled at us and shook hands. However, during the singing I looked over at Carl and, without a hymnal, Carl was singing every word of "Nothing But the Blood". He was the first to 'amen' at appropriate times during the service, too. What a testimony! Even on a rough day, Carl can sing praises and encourage someone while they are preaching the word of God!

Yesterday while the choir was singing "Victory in Jesus" Carl sang right along with us!

Those are memories I will treasure! Hope to have many more!
