New Album
So who's got it? Or heard it? What are your thoughts? Favourites? Ones you hate? Me, I'm hoping to pick up a copy around Thursday and I can't wait!! Let me know all your thoughts on the Merc's debut. Here's what a couple of reviewers had to say.... CM, "S" section (Sun Herald) 15/8/04 Ideas abound on the debut album from this Sydney [do some research mate] rock band, but while many songs start with a frenetic rush, they level out by the first chorus and the excitement dissipates. Frontman Rai Thistlethwayte has the habit of launching into sarcastic monologues and, while it works on the single Emancipate Myself and the strong I Wish Somebody Would Build A Bridge (So I Could Get Over Myself), it's overused. Part Weezer, part Australian Crawl, part unfulfilled. 6/10 David Braithwaite, Daily Liberal (Dubbo newspaper) 12/8/04 Without even a dash of local parochialism, Thirsty Merc's self-titled debut album is one of the strongest Aussie kick-offs you'll have wrapped your ears around. The nattily suited four-piece - three hail from Dubbo [I wonder whether that's still true] - have layered their already proven ear for a hook over a top-class production palette and given birth to a blinder. The album's 13 tracks are collectively more rock than pop, blending genres with a seamless ease that shows off the eclectic musical backgrounds of the band's members. Lyrically, Thirsty Merc veers from the angry young man school of rock poetry to storied tales of everyday youth and love lost, found and maybe just misplaced. High-rotation singles Wasting Time, Emancipate Myself and My Completeness are all present and accounted for, but are no by no means surrounded by fillers. The third track, Undivided Love, is a case in point - it's a fully-rendered wall of catchy rock, driven by a truly Aussie vocal effort declaring what it says on the box. Sunny rocker In The Summertime is an example of how clever these blokes are - it's got a MMM chorus on the outside but it's perfectly wrought on the inside. In the context of these guys' smarts, "Take me back to the sweet times, the hot nights - everything is gonna be all right in the summertime" has just got to be a fun-in-cheek effort. Casting an ear over the slower stuff, the sweet piano ballad Hope channels late-Beatles McCartney, rising its way into a lovely crescendo of chorus and swelling guitar. All in all, there's nary a dud on this long-player - grab it when it's released next week, whack it in the car and slake your thirst all summer long with the Merc. |

I meant to wait also but I couldn't hold myself back Overall I like it - I wish somebody would build a bridge and In the summertime are my favourite tracks, they're totally totally rocking. Someday, Someday and Hope are quite lovely, perhaps too lovely as they both tear me up (or maybe I'm just a big girl )Katie Q has been beefed up, and is quite kickarse, but on the flipside I find the new version of Baby Tell Me a bit freaky, as the words in the verses have been dramatically altered and it's probably because I'm biased by loving the original far too much, but when I first heard it I couldn't help but think of a once-beautiful girl who had been completely ****ed over by her neurotic boyfriend. But I'm sure it'll grow on me The last 3 tracks are brand spanking new, I don't think I've heard them played live before. I haven't heard them much yet, Everything But You is a bit too slow for me, but I think Claude Monet is really adorable. But overall, I think good, yes. Though I would have liked to see Frustration or Lazy Susan make an appearance. |

"Undivided Love" and "Wasting Time" will remain my favourites all the way. Though I'm a little undecided over whether I prefer the EP version of "Wasting Time" or the album version. There's something about Rai's vocals on the EP version that I prefer over the album, but I seem to prefer the instrument sound on the album one. Hmm. Absolutely adore "Someday, Someday" - it's grown on me so much, and "Hope" is just the bomb, it's so complex and has so many layers to it. "Get Over Myself" and "In The Summertime" rock my socks for different reasons. "Get Over Myself" coz of the quirkiness and absolutely manic way in which Rai delivers it. "In The Summertime" coz it makes me want to just get down and dance like crazy. "Katie Q" album version rocks so much harder than the video release. Big props for that! Even my mum loves that tune heaps, she says "it kicks!" The album version of "Baby Tell Me I'm The Only One" has different verse lyrics to the EP. I think that the album version of the lyrics are far too arty for mainstream audiences to relate to. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, it showcases the band's diversity. Also a slight favouritism coz the EP was the first version I heard of it. Despite being told that the album version lyrics are the "original" lyrics! "Claude Monet" is cute, but it's sandwiched between the two tail-end slower tracks on the album "Everything But You" and "Like Snow". This leaves me feeling like something's left to be said. I don't know how to phrase it, but I feel like the slow factor was a bit excessive at the end. Overall, the thing I love the most about this CD and the band is the fact that it is so whole-heartedly Australian. The pop-rock quirky factor is played big time. And it's about bloody time that somebody finally wrote some decent novelty tunes like "Emancipate Myself" or "Get Over Myself"! We take the **** out of ourselves all the time, so we may as well do it in song too. Must concur with Babs, would've been nice to see "Frustration" or "Lazy Susan" make an album appearance. Can only hope that "Frustration" makes it's way onto a disc via b-side. And what about the "Salad Song"????? |
