that's rust, not dirt
See the deposits on the material that looks like dirt, i think it is in fact rust.

IF thats a flint like material.....the very bottom of the stem is not crafted at all, just randomly broken.
So a drill form seems logical. Might only be 1/4 inch
missing or 4 inches !
IF you are saying its rusty, It's probably a key for a Sears toolbox that broke off in the lock.

I did restore the very bottom left leg/base, can you tell? It is still one of my favorites, restored or not.
