First off Lee it depends on how much money you want to spend?Second how much dirt can you move?I think that I remember digging with you at Floyds unless there was more than one Lee out there. Anyway if you go to the Frio River Landing you will spend about $3oo for two days but if you can move some dirt then it is an awesome place. If you have a harder time moving the dirt I would say try one of the screen digs like the T.J.Jennings dig. $150 a day and if you do this make sure you take some kind of short handle rake because if you don't your hands will hurt at the end of the day.The rake is just to pull the dirt toward you on the screen thats all then you work the dirt with your hands so you don't break anything. I have not been to T.J.'s but there have been some beauties coming out of there. |

My opinion would be the place where you can come in and bring a cat D-9 or equivelant. to really dig in and find some artifacts and just move enough dirt, rocks and whhatever else gets in your way I hope my opinion does not hurt anyones feelings. Or offend anybody. Have fun and buy plenty of diesel |

Lee I went back after the group dig for several weekends.I was digging with a big homemade wiggle pick and I found some nice Perds and Bulverdes.I think that I still had my blue Dodge pickup then. On the screens they are usually 6x8 or 6x10 something in that range and it depends on the amount of diggers of how many on one screen.Any where from 2 to 4 people on each screen and they usually keep dirt on them. When you start running out of dirt they will usually have another ready for you. As far as finds its all a crap shoot just like hand digging. You never know what is going to come out of the ground. |

My two cents [ what do they call a fraction of a penny based on inflation ? ] I fully agree with Bobby . . .and Leonard ! If your not digging like crazy, deep and efficient at a hand dig site, Your losing money ! TJ has told Michelle just recently that some of the Shoepeg finds recently are EIGHT FEET DOWN ! That takes diesel ! IF a person is REALLY on a short money leash and can only afford a once a year trip [ or once in a lifetime like Disneyland ]. I would suggest . . . . The Chrisner digfest. Centrally located for gas considerations a terrific clasic Texas BBQ Surface hunting as good as digging [for a 1 day shot] Great digging buddies Door prizes Review the front page pictures of past visits and finds to most of the known areas, also scroll back though the "point chatter" topics for clues that have been discussed in the past. |

SH, Like Bobby said, if you can move some dirt by hand as prerequisite, then for me the next factor is to weigh the cost against the quality of stuff thats been abundantly found at a site. Then I ask myself, are my odds good that my finds may meet or exceed in value what I spend (say $300.). If it's yes with reasonably good odds, then 2 digs come to mind. FRL for best odds for the $, and Rio Bravo for week day hand digging. Shoe peg has some hot spots, but plenty of cold spots too (good when its good, bad when its bad). They may be digging to 8 foot depth, which ought to be transitional paleo at least, but we will see how long it lasts. The paleo layer in our cave is at 9 feet, but is not consistant with the original natural rises and falls of the original floor level. Diesel? Yeah, I use it, but all the digging is by hand, as we only use the loader to periodically remove the spoils and large boulders from the cave/ dig face, and everything dug is sifted (lots of work). Another thought is.......that the best pay dig might be the site that you yourself find, and either lease or buy to dig at your own comfortable rate. It can still be done....I'm doing it! Paying is Paying, just depends on how you want to go about it. I know that I'm not going to loose the desire to dig tommorrow, next year, or 5 years down the road. Heck, between loving to dig open new caves, and digging for artifacts, I should have grown scales and claws by now! Ha! Just food for thoughts..I guess. It's all about....getting to the point! (Austin Powers) YEAH BABY!

Lee, Screen digs are the easiest way to go. Normally, I can go through about 10 screens a day. More dirt you move the more points you find. Personally, I like the hand digging, you know the getting down to the earth type of a deal. Just something about the peace and quiet, birds chirping, and bees buzzing without backhoes running in the background. |

I agree with Pat...screen diggin is a little easier but the thrill isn't what it is in hand diggin and seein somethin nice pop outta the bank or expose just a base and get you all giddy about if'n its whole or not. Pardon the recdneck typin..I been readin alotta 'ol Douglas's posts here of late I reckon. |
