Do Mosquito's Flee From Citronella?

Warnings of mosquito-carried diseases may prompt you to stock up on your favorite bug repellents. But if they include citronella candles or incense, you may not be as protected as you think.

Most researchers, including the American Mosquito Control Association, say that while citronella candles have a mild repellent effect against mosquitoes, they don't offer significantly more protection than do other candles that produce smoke. And typically, citronella's effects last only one hour.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends products containing DEET or picaridin as effective insect repellent ingredients. Oil of lemon eucalyptus, a plant-based chemical, may offer protection comparable to low concentration of DEET. Follow label instructions carefully when using these products. Don't use DEET on the hands of young children or at all on infants younger than 2 months of age.

Have a great and safe summer on the water and outdoors.
