My favorite memory of Looie is all of them. As a now five time member of the Lone Star Permanent Staff, I spent many hours talking with Looie. This summer just wasn't the same without his smiling face at every meal, or his stories in the Great Hall. Looie was our chieftain in Lone Star, we all loved him. When Looie left us last summer, it left a void in our summer. One of my favorite stories that Looie related to me involved him and my younger brother. As I grew up at camp I got to know Looie, and related my stories and experiences to my brother David. When I walked into the Dining Hall one day for lunch during David's first year on staff, Looie walked up to me happier and smiling bigger than ever. Looie began to tell me about his experience earlier that day when my brother walked down to the great hall with a group of first year campers because they wanted to meet Looie. Since the first years were not tribesmen, they all sat down outside the white rocks and had a long conversation with Looie about the old days, and how camp used to be. That conversation meant a lot to Looie, and I hope it touched all of those boys also. One last thought, a large number of the Lone Star Staff rode up to Looie's memorial services, after the services, on the bus trip back to camp, we the Lone Star Staff sang every camp song that we could think of. I think that this is what Looie would have wanted, not necessarily that we were joyous, but that we were not dwelling on the sadness of Looie's departure but getting back to what camp should be.
