Stoning. Why isnt it done anymore.
I am a former Christian. In Christianity we are taught that the law was done away with.
I am just learning about the law and how to keep it. I am trying to get a better understanding of what is right and what is wrong.
I understand why we no longer sacrifice animals. I found it in Torah. The temple is gone and Ha Shem wants us to praise and repent with our lips.
I am having trouble understanding why it is ok that we dont stone for sin. I ask this because my family will be trying to missionize me once they find out that I am not a Christian anymore and I want to be sure that I am guarded with knowledge. Where can I find the explanation of why this part of the law is not followed and how it is ok with the Most High.
I hope my question makes sense.

Chaiyah:
The question is an interesting one and I think I'll study it out as well.
I just want to encourage you to keep studying, keep asking questions and keep praying for knowledge and understanding. You WILL find all of the answers to your questions.
You and I are walking one the same road. I too turned away from Christianity about 2 yrs ago and to let my family tell the story I'm the anti-christ! Hopefully your family will be more accepting of the truth but, if not, don't let that stop you. I have discovered that in an effort to prove me wrong my family has been studying more than ever. And my brother-in-law now no longer believes in the trinity. So, I encourage you to study study and study some more. The truth always bears itself out.

Re: Stoning. Why isnt it done anymore.
Thanks so much for your reply :). So this is what I have found out so far. Well first off I wanted answers that can be found in Torah because I am anticipating the questions and I want to make sure there are answers for them found where my Christian family can not argue KWIM.
Ok from what I understand, in Torah it speaks of a council of men that G-d says should be convened as a court to judge on matters.
So for example with a child that is disobedient, it says that both mother and father have to take child to the quart and tell of the child sinfulness. Now most mothers and many fathers are not readily willing to put their child in such a position so it would be very hard to get both parents to accuse the child. Then the court has to agree that the accused is indeed guilty in order for this judgement to be carried out. So for these offenses it is very hard to even get to a place where such a thing is able to come to pass.
Now in this day there is no such quart as far as with the Hebrew/Jewish/Israelite people so the process according to Torah is not able to be carried out.
In a nutshell from what I have researched, you cant just say that a person has done a sin and they be stoned. It takes a long process of many channels to even carry out such a judgement.
Did that make sense?
If anyone has info on this or finds that what I have found is not accurate please chime in. I am very new to this and really want to learn :)

Re: Stoning. Why isnt it done anymore.
In this day and age and considering we are under the "authority " of a government not our own ,in a land not our own, you'd be sent to prison for something like that. Secondly, not one of us are in a position to cast judgement on ANYONE to make the decision to stone or not stone a person. We all STINK ! The Most High is redeeming us slowly but surely and we have not reached an acceptable level of righteousness to make decisions as this.

Re: Stoning. Why isnt it done anymore.
Actually while 'stoning' is not practiced in America it is still practiced in other countries and if I understand it correctly, it is still a prescribed punishment in Sharia law.
I don't think it is a matter of passing judgment on anyone since the Torah specifically outlined which crimes for which stoning was prescribed. Deut 17:1-7 talks about the stoning of an idol worshiper. Ex: 19:12-13 speaks about stoning or throwing down someone who touched the mountain when the Children of Israel were preparing to receive the Torah. Even animals were stoned (Deut 21:28). So, clearly it is not an issue of passing judgment.
But, I'm wondering if the point is the method of execution (stoning) or the execution itself? I wonder if 'stoning' was the method used to illustrate the severest punishment for crimes that Hashem considered to be the most heinous. On the other hand there are many ways to carry out an execution so why stoning versus beheading or drowning or another method?

Re: Stoning. Why isnt it done anymore.
This is what I found about the method and why.
Well first off Hebrew/Jews/Israelites believe that the body is holy. That is why we follow the laws of food and why we dress in a modest fashion.
I have read that how we think it was done was not accurate. They used to take a person to a cliff and throw them off so that they would hit the stone on bottom. Causing a quick death with little mutilation of the body. If the person was still alive at the bottom then those who are there picked up stones and threw them at the person to cause death as quickly as possible.
The reason for not beheading and other mutilating methods is that they cause extreme mutilation to the body which is holy.
This is what I gathered from what I have read on the matter.

Re: Stoning. Why isnt it done anymore.
Stoning is not done anymore because we are on such a great and terrible punishment that we can't follow the Laws to the fullest in this country or any-other. We should try to stay away from situations that would ward a stoning from people. I always felt that The Most Great put the stoning law in the Torah to scare our ancestors into doing what was right because who really wants to get hit by rocks anyway? It never worked because they were relatives, and if they had stoned each other, they would have ended the lives of many loved ones. Talk about a stone and a hard location. Oh yeah, don't pick up sticks on the Sabbath because we had our example. The person who done that and was stoned is Xed in my mind. I felt bad for him. Don't forget to unturn the stone.

Re: Stoning. Why isnt it done anymore.
From my limited knowledge hopefully I can shed a little light on this issue. From what I have studied, stoning, beheading, choking, and other forms of capital punishment can only take place under the authority of Moshe. Before Moses died he passed this
onto council of seventy elders (Numbers/Bamidhbar 11:16-17), which came to be known as the Sanhedrin (from a Greek term meaning council). It was only when the Sanhedrin was present that an individual could be punished by death. It might be interesting to you--as it is to me being an ex- chr*ist*ian-- that the Sanhedrin was not present when it is said that the Jews sentenced J*e*sus to die. In anycase, though the Sanhedrin had the authority to dispense capital punishment, according to the Rabbi's, a Sanhedrin which administered the death penalty more than once every seventy years was seen as a destructive. In any case Jews have not had a Sanhedrin, and therefore have not administered capital punishment since the fourth century. Some Jews in Israel however are trying to reestablish the Sanhedrin using halacha as recorded by Rambam.
Hope that helps a little,
Gabriel
