This is an item that has been around for some years again. I do not remember closing the pool every year, does it now get drained very year?
If we can raise the fog level in our maintenance fees, we should do it this next budget meeting coming up, as it used to be in earlier years.
I recall somewhat around $100 pool fee each year for each unit, this number should be reinstated. We used to have an arrangement with our sister resort close by, the Sanibel Cottages. Has this been considered, or are we not sister and brother anymore?
All units in the maintenance weeks at Casa Ybel should not be charged with this fee.

We are there week 39 with Linda. They don't do pool maintenance every year but this will be the second year in recent memory that we are without a pool during our week.

We have been told we can go next door but who wants to pack up everything for a hike to another resort or drive over to the pool. The staff also suggested we use the Sanibel public pool which I will not comment on further.

Any compensation we could receive for not being able to use the resort amenities due to regular maintenance would be greatly appreciated. The only thing they have offered us for our trouble is beach chairs set up every day on a first come, first serve basis.

This isn't the first time it happened and we are sure it won't be the last. We pay the same fees as everyone else and often deal with maintenance issues preventing use of the resort or even our units.

My advice is to quit complaining, though most users of this blog are professionals at it.

There is a perfectly good gulf and beach right out your back door. The wall to the Cottages is less than 5 minutes. Also, the Sanibel public pool is great idea. In fact, there will be less people in that pool than Casa Ybel. I think the beach chairs is a wonderful offer. Compensation will add up to well over $100 for the week.

Wow, how did my post generate such a antagonistic response as your first sentence? Maybe you should not assume the worst of everyone, as you so obviously do.

I only responded here to make sure no one thought the pool was drained every year - because it isn't. If there was to be a discussion of compensation for us, as Carl mentioned, I thought it would be polite to say it was appreciated.

But, for the record:

I never have complained in my discussions with the staff. Feel free to ask them and they will tell you not one time, in any discussion, have I ever been anything but cordial and simply asking for information and options. I always try to be polite to everyone, period.

I rent the beach chairs and umbrella, for the full week, every year and had planned to do same this year. I know how much it costs and am willing to pay for it. They show up each morning reserved right in front of my unit perfectly. In fact, I usually spend part of my day at the beach and part at the pool. It is one of the nicest things to do when on vacation at our resort. I never said there wasn't a value to it but I will get less value for the same money since nothing is reserved and will be first come, first serve.

I can drive to the public pool near my home in about the same time as Sanibel and about the same price to get in without any annual maintenance fees. We pay the same maintenance fees as everyone else who is able to enjoy one of the nicest pools on the island every year. Why would I want to get in a car and drive to the public pool, pay to get in and pay for the use of our beach front private pool I can't use? If you had ever been there during our weeks you would know the pool is always very nice and not overly crowded at all.

Finally, due to my severe allergic reaction to stings, I can't risk getting in the ocean water if there are a large number of jelly fish around. That does happen from time to time during our week and there goes my perfectly good gulf you referred to as if I didn't appreciate it at all. I hate not being in the water when jelly fish visit us but it is their ocean first. Your assumption that we discount the ocean is misplaced.

I hope you can read this post in the manner it was intended. Not angry at all but I certainly wanted to make the point that you can sometimes attempt to believe positive things other than negative ones about others that you don't even know.

Before i say anything let me say i do understand your being unhappy about the pool for what isworth weeks36 37 38 & 39 were sold with lowercost because tney were mai tence weeks. It is statelaw that allweeks pay the same fees ihope you enjoy as best you can your week in (perhaps a flawed) paradise9

Well Thank You Johnson for the information..
I must admit I was not aware that state law was involved with the fee structure. I was aware that our weeks were not premium weeks but foolishly assumed it was simply related to the chance of weather related issues. This lil speedbump in my vacation time at Casa Ybel is simply that. I am disappointed for sure but will enjoy every moment (almost). Thanks Again for clarifying things so nicely.

Is it correct that weeks 37-39 were sold as maintenance weeks? And, is it true that this was disclosed at the time of sale and the buyers are or should be fully aware of this fact?

When ibought in 1980 there was a chart toselect weeks from it clearly showed some uhits in certian weeks as maintenace weeks. All ofthe units were in weeks36 37 38 &39. Of course if the week was soldby theoriginal owner the info might not have been passed on. Personally if i been there for a week and noticed work going on i would have gone to the office for info and educated myself.

Linda just a bit more info the rule is that each unit wek pays the same amount for maintenace and reserves. The only varienceis the property tax billed by lee county they value some weeks higher than others and bill accordngly. Just wanted i had not misled youor anyone else. Its still paradise.

Closer, Petey, but still not there. This ditty is actually a limerick and, as such, needs a couple more lines. There are a few variations, but this is the one I knew of:

A funny old bird is a pelican.
His beak can hold more than his bellican.
Food for a week
He can hold in his beak,
But I don't know how the hellican.

Orig.told by my old dear Aunt Kate (Otley) in Philadelfia in the 1950's.
A dear aunt I shared with Grace Kelly! (Jack Kelly and Jess Otley were partners in a Brick Construction Company "Kelly for Brickwork"). The same Aunt Kate introduced us to CASA YBEL in 1969, when they invited my wife and I, and our 3 year daughter Katrina to share shell collecting for a week in old "Casa Ybel" (Cabins on stilts) with parking space for a plane or car. The landing strip was on the other side of the road.
Aunt Kate had her large private Shell Museum in Narberth. Pa, and was helped by the curator of Shells in a large Museum in Philadelfia. Dr Abbot,
I think it was, wrote some of our best Shell books, and worked upstairs in Sanibel's Bailey Shell Museum for some time before he passed away a few years later. We met him there a couple of times, he also worked as judge in many Sanibel Shell Weeks!
Sorry, but that Lemerick got me started and reminded me of our original connecion to Sanibel, at old Casa Ybel in 1969.(43 years ago), my Pelican Limerick was from that time also, thanks for the upgrade.

Correct. Just replace the second and third lines with "Who had triplets named Nick, Pat, and Tat", and whatever one syllable names you want in lieu of "Nick" or "Pat", if desired.

My Dearest Pete
After reviewing my original post I fail to find a request for advice. I simply answered the previous poster who questioned wether the pool was indeed closed. I did however commit the horrendous act of expressing my disappointment that the pool was closed and that it is not the first time this has happened during my years of ownership. Being the good steward of Sanibel,more specifically Casa Ybel,that you apparently,are surely you must be aware that most major renovations occur during these weeks. Pardon my lack of enthusiasm for these activities. The observation that we pay at the same level as those who have never enjoyed the pounding of hammers etc that we have was simply that,an observation. As for the ability to use another resorts ammenities.I am not a fan. Been there,done that and felt as welcome as a leper at a MaryKay convention! Sorry if this discussion has ruffled your feathers my friend.

Just got home from our week 37. The weather was great. There is plenty of free beach furniture for everyone. The resort made arrangements for use of pools within walking distance at properties on both sides of Casaybel and from what I saw being done to the pool, it is beautiful. At this weeks morning coffee meeting we recalled the pool was closed over 7 years ago, seems like yesterday. There was a lot of work going on to our buildings as well, but all in all with very little interruption. The island is quiet, lots of closed restaurants. We felt like we had Sanibel all to ourselves. Next year won't come soon enough.

ATTENTION EVERYONE!!! Please ignore any posts from Pelican Pete. He is simply a JACKASS with nothing better to do than stir the pot. He has no vested interest in Casa Ybel. I doubt he's even been to Sanibel.

Ouch Joe.....but you are corect about one thing - why would I come to Casa Ybel when the pool is closed? The waddle to the Cottages is too far.

I responded to the pool comment a couple of weeks ago, but for some reason my comment were removed. The short version is that these repares were essential to maintaining our 5 star status. The maintenance weeks are the weeks of lowest occupancy and also not popular weeks to visit Sanibel.
It is my understanding that the pool work will be completed this Friday Sept 28 and similiar repairs will not be required for many years.
I am very proud of our resort and I sincerely beleive that Casa Ybel is the best resort on the Island and that we are should do what ever is necessary to maintain our standing

Whe I asked about the constant disruption during the 38th week, I was told at an owner's meeting I was told that my contract clearly states that this is a maintenance week and I was told so at the time of purchase. There is no contractual statement as to this issue and I know for a fact that i had not been told. It is almost a joke the number of times I have either been barred from my unit because of repairs or had the pool made unavailable during my week. I paid full price for the unit and it is totally unfair that certain weeks always disrupted by repairs.
