Dale Murphy

Well, it took me forever, but I finally figured out the whole Dale Murphy thing. Kind of.

He was a home/road split guy. His home OPS, for his career, was 100 points higher at home.

In 1987, the best season of his career, he did the following:

Home: .346/.493/.673/1.166
Road: .249/.338/.495/0.833

That says it all, I think.

In his 1982 MVP season, he had a 988/784 OPS split, with 24 of his 36 homeruns at home.

In his 1983 MVP season, he had a 1.011/.859 OPS split.

Amazing. I really don't know how this information eluded me for so long, because it really is quite obvious.

Two things:

a) Murphy goes into the same pile as Jim Rice now.

b) If I had known this a month ago, I would not have opposed Matt Holliday for MVP nearly as vehemently as I did.

Re: Dale Murphy

Oh man, all my childhood heroes are falling right before my eyes.

Ruben Sierra was essentially dead-on-the-table on the road in the 1980s.

Re: Dale Murphy

Sierra does have a better overall road OPS, if that helps any.

Re: Dale Murphy

I suspect the Sierra thing is just another lamentation of the 1989 MVP outcry, though.

Re: Dale Murphy

You know, "Ruben Sierra was robbed by Robin Yount of the 1989 MVP" was one of the early bonding moments of Scott and I's friendship.

It was a tough pill to swallow when we both realized that Yount was at least every bit as deserving as Sierra in 1989, and probably actually more so.
