I have not yet become a Phillies fan, but . . .

I have never detested the Phillies, unlike other National League teams that have given me occasion to hate them over the years (Dodgers, Mets, Cardinals, Astros, Marlins, Reds).

I have lived in Philadelphia for a year and half now, and I am enamored with my new home and its baseball team. I really have a great deal of admiration for many of our players, and I have already developed a Gary Matthews, Jr.-like adoration for Jayson Werth.

The point of all this is that I feel as though I became a little more closely united with the Phillies, their fans, and their fate when the followign sequence of events occured:

January 29: Phillies sign Pedro Feliz

January 30: Mets announce deal for Johan Santana

Oh come now, Philly Phans will love Pheliz because he's Phantastic!

(he says with tears of joy streaming down his face)

If it makes you feel any better, the Phillies weren't going to contend even before that sequence of events.

Re: I have not yet become a Phillies fan, but . . .

There was an article somewhere - maybe the local paper - entitled "Kyle Kendrick is No One Year Wonder" or something like that.

The more I look at this guy, I think that article is correct, Kendrick is not a one year wonder.

You have to be a wonder for at least one year to meet that qualification, which he has not yet done.

Super excited about getting rid of Matt Maloney though.

There's a new Baseball Evolution nickname in there somewhere.

2nd half - .189/.250/.283

Re: I have not yet become a Phillies fan, but . . .

According to ESPN.com, Kendrick was the only pitcher in the majors to acquire two "cheap wins", defined as wins accumulated in starts that were not quality starts.

Re: I have not yet become a Phillies fan, but . . .

I'm not sure what ESPN is thinking, but that's false.

39 starters won 2 or more games (57 total wins) while giving up 4 or more earned runs (not a QS).

60 starters won 2 or more games (155 wins among them, including 6 for Dice-K) while pitching less than six innings and giving up 3 or less unearned runs.

Re: I have not yet become a Phillies fan, but . . .

109 starters recorded multiple wins in non quality starts.

Leaders:
Matsuzaka - 7
AJ Burnett - 7
Braden Looper - 6
Edwin Jackson - 6

Tim Lincecum - 0
(he did record losses in two quality starts and no decisions in seven quality starts)

Re: I have not yet become a Phillies fan, but . . .

Geez ESPN, isn't Kendrick bad enough already that you don't need to make up stats that show how bad he is?

I will write an article on the converse of this notion soon.
