Something you probably didn't know about Ichiro

Just began reading The Meaning of Ichiro and came across these two little tidbits that I thought I'd share.

In 536 at bats in three-years of high school ball, Ichiro struck out just 10 times....all looking. He hit .502 with 19 home runs and 211 RBI despite being just 5'9" tall and weighing only 120 pounds. According to school records, he connected solidly on 97% of all strikes he swung at.

As a pro for Orix, in 1997 he once went two months, 216 PA, without striking out. In '99 he got hits on 70% of all the strikes he swung at.

Meaningless yes, but very impressive nontheless I think.

"In '99 he got hits on 70% of all the strikes he swung at."

Okay... how did he do on the balls that he swung at? And who made the determination on whether the pitch was a ball or a strike?

Re: Something you probably didn't know about Ichiro

You'll have to take that at face value, I have no answer for you.

Either way though I think it's impressive.
