Digging a cave

On Thanksgiving I found a cave/rock shelter next to a creek on my uncle's ranch by Waco. After numerous floods, lots of dirt have been deposited in it. If I was going to try and dig the dirt out, would the best way to do it with a shovel and a screen?
P.S. These are the more perfect points that were on top of the dirt in the cave.
Thanks, Phil DeLobbe

Re: Digging a cave

I have heard you should screen small because you can find beads in caves. But that's what I've heard.

Thanks!

Re: Digging a cave

Here is a picture of one of the shelters. There are two others that we didn't get pictures of but this is the most productive one. As you can see it's very close to the creek. Now I can't wait to go back!

Re: Digging a cave

Hi Phil- I screened caves and rock shelters in the foothills of the rocky mountains years ago. Some shelters produced large quanities of points and tools. I used fold up army spades and quarter inch screen, not much gets through the quarter inch, However, if you go any smaller, the dirt sometimes won't screen through very well if at all. Just depends on the courseness of the dirt. Good luck pard and hope you find lots of stuff.
