Yes and No! I wouldn't call it an axe, but I would call it a CLUB. They did make those also, and yours is a nice one.

Yes, the word maul works fine, as it was used like a club or hammer to pound or split things apart, rather than chop or cut things apart with a flint axe. Hard stones like this were also used to initally bust or fracture apart large flint nodules to see if the material was suitable for point making.
