Looks like some sort of a pestal. I have found similar stones, here in Texas. But never one that was grooved before. That is awesome. Did it come from the Midwest?
They were used to grind up acorns and nuts, and to mash roots and herbs.
If your in indian country, somebody would have tried to use it for something.
That dark "splotch" is a classic example of a
deteriorated MARKASITE deposit.

I agree, it looks like a hand tool for hammering at things, and from the looks of the bottom (striking face), it hammered something alot harder than nuts. The gooved depressions for the fingers is intriguing.

I just dug a big lump of iron [ sulfide ] out last week, in slightly more classic
form than the above included example above.
Very had to see in the pic but it is cleanly "pecked" all the way around the middle.
The owner must have had a heck of a job to get even that much done. . . . imagine trying to carve a ridge around a piece of re-bar with flint
chips. .
