Re: please help identify

Looks like some sort of a pestal. I have found similar stones, here in Texas. But never one that was grooved before. That is awesome. Did it come from the Midwest?

They were used to grind up acorns and nuts, and to mash roots and herbs.

Re: please help identify

If your in indian country, somebody would have tried to use it for something.

That dark "splotch" is a classic example of a
deteriorated MARKASITE deposit.
Gino [ remember him ? passed away at a young age !]
He found one in classic good condition. Scroll back about THREE pages of old point chatters. See;
FOSSILISED PEACHES OR WHAT MAR 7

Re: please help identify

Gino passed away? Hal, are you just saying that because he totally disappeared?

Re: please help identify

Yes

[ passed away from point chatter ]

Re: please help identify

I agree, it looks like a hand tool for hammering at things, and from the looks of the bottom (striking face), it hammered something alot harder than nuts. The gooved depressions for the fingers is intriguing.
Nice Find!

Re: please help identify

I should have told Ya'all where it is from. Northern Ohio.
Say Hal what is this MARKASITE deposit? I have several pieces with this kind of a mark on it.

Thanks for all your help. I always get great results from this sight

Re: please help identify

Markasite is an accumulation of iron sulfide.
Google MARKASITE MINERAL

If you find one like Gino's and smack it with a
chisel, it has a neat "starburst" design

Re: please help identify

I just dug a big lump of iron [ sulfide ] out last week, in slightly more classic
form than the above included example above.

Very had to see in the pic but it is cleanly "pecked" all the way around the middle.
The owner must have had a heck of a job to get even that much done. . . . imagine trying to carve a ridge around a piece of re-bar with flint
chips. . SmileyCentral.com

. . . .SmileyCentral.com I FORGOT TO HIT EDIT !

Re: please help identify

Geo, take your sun off when viewing the "pecked"
lump of iron
Admittedly, holding it in your hand is worth a thousand pics !

Both ends of the specimen have really well defined, knobby "ray ends" the pecking erased the knobs and left a very small crystaline spackled surface.

All clear now

No eye problems with that fine example of yours of the Markasite interior. . . . It's been pecked by a steel COLD CHISEL

No ID on that whatever it is in the bottom pics !
