My dad found this point in 1987 on the Trinity River. He took it to the Geology Dept at Sam Houston State and they told him it was Manning Fused Glass. The professor took him to a sand pit in Trinity where there was a vein of this glass. He was told the glass could have been formed from coal that ignited underground and caused the sand to fuse. My dad took a few pieces of the glass from the quarry, one being the other piece in the picture. Anyone ever seen a point made from this type of material?
Chris, thats a fabulous piece especially with the backround story. The original owner must have realised the uniqueness and special powers it could hold. . . Like for shooting a white buffalo.
I see "glass point" topic isnt drawing as much debate as it used to, so just to keep in practice,
Glass aficianados, check this out.
Bout 8 yrs ago I saw a one hour science documentary on TV that delt with an ancient crystal [ glass ] skull. That came back to mind with the recent glass interest so I Googled " CRYSTAL CARVED SKULL"
There it is under WORLD MYSTERIES. Lookers: just check out the " MITCHELL-HEDGES crystal skull.
This glass story ties in a bit with Lee's predicament with authentification. The crystal head was evaluated by the Hewlet Packard people !
My dad was told that this point would be rare due to the few possibilties of glass forming naturally in the East Texas area. Here are a few pics and explanations I found on the net. Also included is a report from a dig in Walker County, kind of boring but I thought it was interesting. If anybody knows anything relating to Manning Fused Glass, let me know. My dad wants to see if he can find anyone with artifacts made from the same material.
