question on mounds

ok so ive never hunted central texas . someone explain to me exactly what a mound looks like , the ranch we hunt in new mexico has probably 40 large round pits , i call em pits anyway ! these are mostly 10 feet across and made from thousands of hand size rocks . some on the canyon floor have dirt build up and may only have a foot of the rocks showing , others close to cliff walls may be three feet above ground , and a few are almost five feet tall , around all of these are found flakes galore , but never seen anything in the pits or in the rocks ,

Re: question on mounds

jerry go to "shelter diggin west texas" there is a little explanation of west texas / desert type mounds......basically they are just cook mounds ...Sotol was a mainstay for indians in central texas to new mexico and probably further.....heres a link http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/ornamentals/nativeshrubs/dasyliriontexan.htm ... Ive found pieces of sandals , rope , clothing and bedding ...One neat occurance was seeing the imprint of a human in the fetal position on soto bedding ..Im sure they used the plant in many different ways.....It's todays version of cotton ...You should try diggin around the cook mounds...Im sure they had brush shelters of some sort during warmer parts of the season and camped and live right there next to the middens.....Most all of the west texas cook mounds ive seen are most always associated with some sort of rock shelter/caves....If you find a mound on the canyon floor there is probably a shelter near by.....Ps ive dug a pit/midden/cook mound/ whatever you want to call them.....It was 3 ft high by about 10 or so ft looked almost perfect square....I dug it all the way to the bottom and a pretty good size hole.......NOTHING BUT ASH......And like you said lots of flint chips around the mound......Theres plenty of arrows to be found around the mounds just keep looking..... Also Ive described central texas mounds in a post " found a mound that might get you a little idea of the way the indian camped around here.........Hey do yall have space for an extra gun on you hunting lease...
