Good show, that bottom point is the cream of the crop. I have a couple of petrified woods points, but the quality of material is pretty poor, and they just made triangular points out of this stuff. Not very impressive.
Tehuacana, I've tried to knap petrified wood and I don't know how they did it. If you don't hit with the grain, it just shatters. Travis, all are from Montgomery Co.
Professional knapper Flo just said the very same thing recently about petr. wood shattering .
Gotta be patient for others to search for their wood point finds in the bottom of buckets. As for me I have yet to find one single one that I'm sure is wood.
[ lotta wood grain look alikes though ]
I never tried to knap it before, but I used to do lapidary work and the wood in this area (S.Tx) is too internally fractured and flawed. I found one piece with an agatized core, but it was worse then the regular wood. I've found three definite petr. wood points, but they are small crudely worked trianglular points. Too much chert around for them to use inferior wood. Mabbe they were just testing it.
Now that looks like some high quality wood. Just wonder what the ancients thought petriefied wood was? Did they have an idea? Or was it just another rock.
