Hi All, My cousin Brad Stiles & I left home here Thursday evening (Jan.21) at 5:45pm & drove all night, 710 miles later arrivving in Campwood, TX at 6:02am Friday tired, yet wired for the days screen dig at Barksdale (Nachos digsite), about 4+ miles North of Campwood. We had been here before & knew where to have a great breakfast at the Casa Falcon Restaurant so that where we drove to first. Coffee & food rejuvenated both of us & soon another pair of screeners from Oregon came in, then Nacho was soon there as well. Friday went extremely slow, perhaps the slowest I ever had on the screens to date, as I found a few broke artifacts, and 1 broken drill from all day of moving lots of dirt. Brad did better, finding a langtry & a castroville, both with ears missing & some other brokes, but still not very well for 8 hours of screening. Saturday was our next chance & we were at the Casa Falcon by 6:30am for coffee & breakfast. Soon other screeners starting showing up & I recognized Lewis "Indy" Smith right away when Raymond & him walked in & shouted at them. Brad & I invited them to our table & we all got acquainted real fast & talked artifacts solid over breakfast with the other screeners that showed up. By 7:30 we all headed to the digsite, parked & got ready to screen. There were 5 tables set up this day & only 1 loader to keep it all going. Actually another loader should have been there, but that wasnt our call to make, though it was suggested to Nacho that it was needed.
My day on the screens was almost as slow as Mojave's & Lewis & Raymonds, I was wanted to redeem my bad day from Fridays results & I did, but ended the day with 3 nearly full points & some pooters, but all in all a lousy day for me. Now Brads day was going as slow as mine till he scored a point around 10:30am that stopped all the tables & had Rosco (the mini-loader operator) stopping the loader to see what awesome point had just been found. It was a G-10!, 1 15/16" long by 1 13/16" wide super flared out walking man Frio point, by far the best Frio I have have ever seen actually found & Brad was one happy man! The pictures will explain what I am saying & even 2 of Nachos loader operators for his digsite said it was the BEST Frio to date that they had seen come off a screen ever. Brad went on to find another smaller Frio, a nice Martindale, some other pooters, some small blades, all in all a great day for him. I felt fortunate to have been standing a few feet away & got to witness him finding his best arrowhead he has ever found to date, congrats Brad! ...John Fraser, Fredonia, KS. Heres all the photos of what we found:
Brads G-10 Frio
Brads best artifacts from both days
Brads remaining Blades & brokes
My best artifacts from both days, a drill, points & blades
Excellent report John, thats quite an adventure trip, drive all night, screen all day. . . no fat on dem bones !
That is a fantastic Frio of Brad's. Even the other brokes seem to indicate that tribe had a real pentchant for big feet !
Til you mentioned Mojave I was wondering if there was any Texans there besides Nacho & Rosco.
Good thing you did your trip when you did. . . What with the snows now in Kansas, you might have been stuck at Nacho's til spring
