This material looks remarkably like Bandera County Root-Beer. However it comes from North Dakota. The primary source area is in west central North Dakota, especially Dunn and Mercer counties. Significant quantities are found in a wider part of this region. KRF has been documented as very rarely occurring in the form of scattered small cobbles and pebbles beyond the primary and secondary source areas, including the southern half of Minnesota and north central Iowa.
I really like the Clovis Point. This one is well made and a little over two inches long. It came from an Illinois collection. Enjoy the pic in greyscale.
It is even possible to find Knife River flint in Texas. This is a map of the source of flint for artifacts found at McFaddin Beach. Number 30 is Knife River.
Q Fred,
Does that map represent ALL the identified flint sources found at McF ?? OR, do the various numbers represent the DIFFERENT identified flint outcrops. I cant find a '30' in TX, would that mean a McF find originated all the way up there in ND ? ( long Q, sorry )
The map shows the source of all the lithic material found at the McFaddin site. You can't find #30 (Knife River Flint) because you are looking at Texas, and 30 is way up thar at the top of the map in North Dakota.
This is from: Stright, Melanie J., Eileen M. Lear, and James F. Bennett, 1999 Spatial Data Analysis of Artifacts Redeposited by Coastal Erosion: A Case Study of McFaddin Beach, Texas. US Department of the Interior, Minerals Management Service.
WOW...what an immense amount of good information. If we can visualise a line drawn from each of the source
locations to McF it would look like a promo ad for going to Las Vegas..people ( trade flint? )coming from all over the country !
