Re: Whole fossil found in mound ( not sure what it is ?)

I think the common name is a Texas heart. It's actually sediment that filled in the bi-valve and that is what solidified to create the fossil. The shell didn't last. Only the sediment. Well, that's what I was told years ago.

Re: Whole fossil found in mound ( not sure what it is ?)

Thanks Flintpig. I have seen pieces of what looked like one in the past, but this was my first and only whole one spotted so far. We are finding sporatic fossils of other types as well. I think the natives must have collected them too. Happy Hunting.

Looks like a Cretaceous Cardiidae mollusk. Cardiidae being a fancy word for heart shaped. I found one the other day at the Pipe Creek dig.

Re: Whole fossil found in mound ( not sure what it is ?)

Protocardia texana, Texas heart shell ( clam ), Lower Cretaceous, 100 to 140 million years old.

Re: Whole fossil found in mound ( not sure what it is ?)

Thanks Y'all. old old old Texas Heart rock. I think I'm gonna keep it indoors from now on. ( it's been outside longed enough ) I can't put it in the rock garden, too pretty. Thanks again. Kris
