Here's some info on the 2 different sizes of umbrella ( & stands ) that I have used when screening.



The duffer model on the L, is for a golfers sized umby. On the R is the Elm tree model, using the large patio sized cover... Harbor freight about
$10. Walmart about $40.
Since the Elm type has a very long center pole all that is really needed is a piece of 2 X 2 X 6 inch angle iron, a large C clamp and a 12 inch length of pipe with a bolt through the bottom.


The 2 models I have are very ( overly ) elaborate after a number of years of evolution.



Standard 3 inch C Clamp > Harbor F $3. - Home D $ 5. holds the angle iron to all sized screen table edges.

The small Duffer has the capability to move up and down....rotate 360 degrees and 180 degrees azimuth.. The Elm only moves L & R



Here,s the components taken apart....VERY ( overly ) intricate engineering & iron work.







With varying sun angles and table orientation, NO umbrella rig can keep a constant 100% shade.. just consider it a handy place to have a temporary respite from full sun.

All umbies must be removed and set aside for dirt loading. The clamp & frame remains fixed.
For tilting tables the angle iron & clamp goes on the main frame.. the hinged side with little room to spare, the C clamp can be just as effectively be mounted horizontally. Or on the side rail.

If you want there is lots of other possibilities...
Tehuacana uses that big patio umbie with the seff standing weighted base.

I've seen the big Umby clamped directly to the upright table leg with just 2 C clamps.

Last century ( very early in the century ) there was a fad of a swimming pool small "umbrella " that was worn like a beanie hat

Hal- you should try a bungee cord. No engineering required. Just wrap and go!

Heartily agreed, the very simplest solution to a project is always the best.

Also, since this morning's posting, I've been on Walmarts' website ( WALMART.COM ).. along with 50+ umbrellas of all sizes & colors ( & $ )...I see they offer an umbrella holder said to be made for clamping on a Golf cart rail.

No needed.

Thanks for the photos , it got me pointed in the right direction , got something built & ready to go , so I will try it out thus weekend & hope for the best , it's going to be a hot one for sure , so I have lots of water , big shade hat & umbrella I hope that does the trick. I will do my part. & try to take what pictures I can , as I will get Jason to post them for me , that boy is a computer savey smart fellow & I will have to watch how he does it so I can figure it out , you know monkey see monkey do , stay cool where ever you be, talk to you soon . Very true but it's craftily according to plan....haven't had anyone ask me to make them one.! I think I may try something out of PVC next

At a recent dig: Peggy, Max & Karl all had a super big style of umbrella....Just made for sportsmen ( like diggers / screeners & beach goers )

It's appropriately named SPORT BRELLA ( put that into Google )

Pointed rather thin metal shaft ( pushes into sand or throw dirt )
The ribs are a strong carbon fiber, flaps for added horizontal protection AND a really great feature, tie down rings at the end of each rib...excellent for moderate wind gust control..

I gave a trial run to ANOTHER new shade invention..."the backpack brella "

On this visit to the SW Texas desert country ....IT RAINED !
Not heavy but lightly for up to an hour at a time...so the new invention worked great for as well as shade .





It's one of those drink backpacks with PVC pipe screwed to a piece of plywood.
The key part of the rig is the swivel to allow different angles ....friction lock to hold.
