I doubt the site owners enjoyed taking this decision. They didn't stop the discussions till some people started to get nasty.
It's just a matter of mutual respect, I think. If I start a thread and nobody answers, then that's a sign that no one is interested. I'm not gonna go and butt into other threads and tell others they're wrong simply because they don't think like me. I certainly wouldn't use insults to make my point.
