For what it's worth, my take has always been that, as he says in that video, the song was written for Deborah, but it alludes to a previous failed romance. I have always wished I could hear that original recording where Deborah sings the answer vocals. I have all her albums and this recording would have been the closest to my dream album with the two of them together. Anyway, "Broken" is my ringtone.
