City Hall gets big send-off

EIGHT decades of popular music will be echoing round the much-loved City Hall as it prepares for a multi-million pound makeover.
In the three months leading up to closure at the end of May for a £12 million refit, an extravaganza of popular music is planned to provide a fitting echo of the famous Sheffield building's history.
Stars from bygone days will recapture the sounds that have given the Barkers Pool landmark its appeal over the years.
Construction workers will be refurbishing the City Hall until September 2005.
Before then thousands of music fans will be able to rekindle memories from the golden days.
General manager Jo Barnes said: "When we close it will in many ways be the end of an era and it is extremely appropriate that some of the famous names who have appeared here over the years will be returning during March, April and May.
"We are going out with a real bang. Every decade from the 30s onwards will be represented."
Among stars planning to visit are vintage heart-throb David Cassidy on April 28, veterans Joe Brown and Marty Wilde, March 13, Davy Jones of the Monkees, March 29 and Rick Savage and Joe Elliot of Def Leppard on the same bill as other South Yorkshire legends Paul Carrack and John Parr, March 12, for a huge charity event.
The Solid Silver 60s Show on April 6 will feature Peter Noone, Brian Hyland, Wayne Fontana and the Dakotas with guest star John Walker from the Walker Brothers.
Other famous names include Cockney rebel Steve Harley, March 15, Lambchop, March 24, Sugababes, March 31, Fairport Convention, April 27, The Shadows, May 8, Mamma Mia, May 6, and the Pink Floyd Tribute Concert, April 16.
Within the restoration programme, the first big overhaul since the building opened more than 70 years ago, the Memorial Hall will have a new look, with versatile seating allowing it to continue to stage concerts requiring an intimate atmosphere as well as opening it up to opportunities to stage conferences and concerts.
Other changes to the building include the introduction of front of house lifts, internal stairs to the Upper Circle and access for the disabled directly into the foyer, improved facilities for performers, a new-look balcony overlooking the grand foyer and opening up the main foyer through the removal of the 80s-style box office. Bars, kitchens and toilets will also be refurbished.
Tickets are available from the box office on 0114 2789789, Hallam FM Arena on 0114 2565656 and at Sheffield Theatres on 0114 249 6000.
