Situation in Spain...?

My high school has a trip to Spain planned for 4/18-4/27/03. Is there a travel advisory regarding Spain. Is there anti American sentiment in Madrid?

Re: Situation in Spain...?

Yes, there are consular information sheets.

If you go to

http://www.attitudetravel.com/spain/

and look at the flags on the left hand side

you will see that there are four links to consular

travel advice on Spain from the United States, United

Kingdom, Australia and Canada. The advice from all

four governments is updated as necessary and it's a

good idea to read any updates before going abroad.

There are currently no specific Travel Warnings

regarding Spain but it's as well to read the standard

advice relating to Spain from the US and - if you have

time - from the other countries.

Certainly nothing to worry about unless you're a high

ranking member of the United States government!

In Spain, as in the UK, France, Germany and other

countries in the EU, public sentiment is divided

between those who support the Bush administration and

those who oppose it.

Significantly, governments and populace are not in

line with each other. Jose Maria Aznar's government in

Spain has swung behind Washington and alongside the

UK, Spain is one of the chief coalition allies of the

US.

That doesn't mean that all Spaniards share Senor

Aznar's convictions. But, while there are individuals

who do not differentiate between the US people and the

US government, those who are informed and discerning

enough to be taking a stand against the Bush

administration over Iraq are unlikely to be confusing

the United States government with the United States

people.

So your party will, I am quite certain, be greeted and

treated in a very warm and welcoming manner during

your stay in Madrid and Spain by everyone (whether

they opposed the invasion or not).
