Carcassonne and Tamaris

I am travelling to Carcasonne in August

2003 we are looking at flights and rail travel any

hint or tips on how to book? Plus during our Stay I

need to travel to Tamaris hints on driving there

would be useful.

Re: Carcassonne and Tamaris

If you are looking to fly into Carcassonne itself,

RyanAir operate flights directly from London Stansted

to Carcassonne airport. If you get your booking sorted

out now, a lot of these flights are going for about

sixty to seventy pounds (one way) so you should be

able to book yourself return flights for about 120-130

each.

Ryanair prices (especially for peak season tickets)

tend to climb in proportion to demand though... so the

longer you leave it, the less likely these prices are

to still be available.

You can book RyanAir tickets at www.ryanair.com

Otherwise, if you prefer to fly from Heathrow or

Gatwick, Carcassonne is a short train journey from

Toulouse and you should be able to find numerous

airlines (BA and Air France at the very least) flying

from Heathrow to Toulouse.

Britisih Airlines are currently selling August tickets

from Gatwick to Toulouse for as low as 25 each way, so

if you don't mind a slightly longer journey on the

other end (from Toulouse to Carcassonne), you could

get a return flight for as little as 50 pounds.

The train from Toulouse Matabiau station to

Carcassonne takes fifty minutes and there are trains

every hour or so. It costs about 10 Euros.

Travelling by train to Carcassonne from Waterloo would

require an early start take a lot longer (the entire

day, I suspect) and would cost a lot more. You would

have to go from Waterloo to Paris, change in Paris,

take the TGV to Toulouse and then change again for

Carcassonne. I wouldn't recommend this.

Given that you're in Windsor, I think that the

cheapest and simplest option by far would, I imagine,

be the BA flight from Gatwick to Toulouse, followed by

the train to Carcassonne.

Driving from Carcassonne to Tamaris, the quickest

route should take you from Carcassonne to the coast,

then north-east, past Nimes, bypassing Marseilles and

then on to Tamaris-sur-Mer.
