Teaching is a second career. I was a nurse and in the medical profession for 24 years. A work injury forced me to change direction with my life and a professor suggested teaching. I have BA in Science(Biology) 5-12 credentials. Started subbing and after being scared to death, I love it. . I may look for a science position, but currently love the flexibility and variation. Plus I can spend time with my grand children.

I initially became a substitute teacher to gain direct teaching experience. In doing so, my intitial goal was an effort to eventually become a college teacher, as I have a Post-Master\'s Certificate in College Teaching.

However, I prefer the flexibility, variety, and control that subbing provides. I sub in several school districts and work with students from various ethnic, social, political, and economic backgrounds. It provides me with a unique challenge.

Education was always my passion, so now I am doing something, career- wise, that I am passionate about. When I come home every day I feel a sense of accomplishment unlike when I was a business executive. While in business, I made others rich. Now, I get to help enrich students minds, which can positively impact their life and society.

I have always wanted to do something to improve society, and subbing is one way this can be accomplished. Students, teachers, schools, and the field of education needs help. For me, substituting is one small way I can help.

I am planning to continue to sub, but may eventually also teach college, preferably, online. This way, I can do both and have time to write and publish. Regardless, of what specific role I play in the future, I am forever committed to the field of education.

Been hoping to find an organization like this for a long long time. I am a lic ensed teacher who became dis-enchanted with the system of education in Colorado some time ago--so many politics and a lot of frustration with both corrupt teachers and administrators. I am currently a youth pastor and head pastor of a small rural fellowship (Christian, Multi-Denominational), and I substitute in 2-3 districts that mirror what I believe is an improving system of running a school. I love teaching and working with youth of all ages, and would invariably return to teaching as an occupation if the right school invited me to do so.

I wish I had discovered this organization sooner. After 15 years of subbing and at age 71 I am ready to put this chapter of my life away. It has been a grand 3rd career following 20 years in the Air Force and 12 working for the State of Alaska. Time for this \"teacher man\" to go.

I have been substituting for since 1993. I work in one district. Last year, 2011-2012 school year, the district I work in went to Aesop for acquiring substitute teachers. In some cases it works well. In others I have had more down days this year than in past years.
I have contacted some of the teachers that I have substituted for in the past, and told them that if you think I have done a good job for you, please consider me when you request a substitute teacher. Many contact me in advance and ask if I am available to substitute on a certain day. I check my calendar, then the Teacher will put it in to the system, then contact me and I will go into the system and retreive it.
I do not have computer access at home so if I am not scheduled I have to call on my phone and check if there are any openings. Sometimes I will call at many hours of the night to check Aesop.
I do enjoy the contact with most of the students. MAny of the students I have had since 6th Grade, and that makes for a better day, because they know me and know what I will put up with. Some still try and find out that it still does not work.

I have been a Sub in Florida for quite some time. We can only use Aesop and Jobulator which I believe are wonderful! I was worried about Jobulator at first but it has proven to be invaluable for getting to the jobs first.
Everyday is interesting!

How did you find the NSTA website?

Had a problem and was wondering if there was a union or an advacate for Subs.

Please enter your comments?

Subs for the Hillsborough County School District are told you are not under contract and you don't have to work. Some places don't respect you and are rude. Some will call Professional Standards over silly stuff and defame your character and impugned your integrity. Is this not unconstitutional, against civil right or my civil liberties. Complaints are lodged and reported to Professional Standards without you being aware or informed of the complaint and who made it. Under your account (lawson number) there is a statement placed "Problem with expiration date". I have been in the school system since the late 60's and I am a product of the Hillsborough Educational System in Tampa, Florida, my parents were teacher in Hillsborough County. It has caused emotional and economical distress. I am not aware of a union locally other than the CTA (Classroom teacher's association) which Subs are not allowed to join. If you can assist me in this manner I would greatly appreciate it. Respectfully, Carmen Griñan

I am a fairly new substitute, having subbed for K-12 but recently 7 and 8 grades. I am currently attending CGPS (online) classes with Franklin Pierce University, Rindge, NH for my BS degree in General Studies and my current class (Career Image and Management) this week we are working on Networking.

I was not aware of any “Professional Networking Group” for substitute teachers. One question I do have does NSTA get involved in individual town school budget hearings?

I have been subbing for 10 years and I have used the aesop system but i really do not like it for I have call schools and oh yes they need subs and when I get to the school they said I really can not sub for I did not use the system but the schools are so short handed and the schools double up classes due to no subs when in fact there are subs willing and able to sub and help out the schools and it is not an issue of money
it is an issue of not using a system that works that for all.
