I wish I had discovered this organization sooner. After 15 years of subbing and at age 71 I am ready to put this chapter of my life away. It has been a grand 3rd career following 20 years in the Air Force and 12 working for the State of Alaska. Time for this \"teacher man\" to go.

I have been substituting for since 1993. I work in one district. Last year, 2011-2012 school year, the district I work in went to Aesop for acquiring substitute teachers. In some cases it works well. In others I have had more down days this year than in past years.
I have contacted some of the teachers that I have substituted for in the past, and told them that if you think I have done a good job for you, please consider me when you request a substitute teacher. Many contact me in advance and ask if I am available to substitute on a certain day. I check my calendar, then the Teacher will put it in to the system, then contact me and I will go into the system and retreive it.
I do not have computer access at home so if I am not scheduled I have to call on my phone and check if there are any openings. Sometimes I will call at many hours of the night to check Aesop.
I do enjoy the contact with most of the students. MAny of the students I have had since 6th Grade, and that makes for a better day, because they know me and know what I will put up with. Some still try and find out that it still does not work.

I have been a Sub in Florida for quite some time. We can only use Aesop and Jobulator which I believe are wonderful! I was worried about Jobulator at first but it has proven to be invaluable for getting to the jobs first.
Everyday is interesting!

How did you find the NSTA website?

Had a problem and was wondering if there was a union or an advacate for Subs.

Subs for the Hillsborough County School District are told you are not under contract and you don't have to work. Some places don't respect you and are rude. Some will call Professional Standards over silly stuff and defame your character and impugned your integrity. Is this not unconstitutional, against civil right or my civil liberties. Complaints are lodged and reported to Professional Standards without you being aware or informed of the complaint and who made it. Under your account (lawson number) there is a statement placed "Problem with expiration date". I have been in the school system since the late 60's and I am a product of the Hillsborough Educational System in Tampa, Florida, my parents were teacher in Hillsborough County. It has caused emotional and economical distress. I am not aware of a union locally other than the CTA (Classroom teacher's association) which Subs are not allowed to join. If you can assist me in this manner I would greatly appreciate it. Respectfully, Carmen Griñan

I am a fairly new substitute, having subbed for K-12 but recently 7 and 8 grades. I am currently attending CGPS (online) classes with Franklin Pierce University, Rindge, NH for my BS degree in General Studies and my current class (Career Image and Management) this week we are working on Networking.

I was not aware of any “Professional Networking Group” for substitute teachers. One question I do have does NSTA get involved in individual town school budget hearings?

I have been subbing for 10 years and I have used the aesop system but i really do not like it for I have call schools and oh yes they need subs and when I get to the school they said I really can not sub for I did not use the system but the schools are so short handed and the schools double up classes due to no subs when in fact there are subs willing and able to sub and help out the schools and it is not an issue of money
it is an issue of not using a system that works that for all.

As a substitute, I had a long time interest in writing a resource handbook. With my co-author, Dr. C. Lynn Fox, we have completed a pocket-size handbook that summarizes essential teaching concepts. I also did all the illustrations. So, check out our website: www.substituteteacherhandbook.org
