This website has brought back so many happy memories for me. As a 11/12/13 year old I used to go trainspotting locally and on family holidays and it was RAIL BLUE all the way . Back then I didn`t do any `reading up` on the subject and I`m learning stuff today from your site that I knew nothing of 30 years ago. It is very interesting. Thanks |

Wonderful site. It brings back so many forgotten memories. Sad to say that at the time i took it all for granted as well ! I now live in Swindon, so am reminded on a daily basis just how much has disappeared. |

Jon, The cutting up of 818 received an outcry amongst the railway fraternity in the early 1980's as the locomotive could have become the third Warship to be preserved. As stated in the 818 caption the locomotive was used at Swindon for apprentice training purposes and, although very little, if any, photograh evidence exists, the Warship must have been repainted into green livery before scrapping. |

Your Warship page confirms something that I have suspected from a photo I saw many years ago of 818 Glory in Swindon Works prior to being cut up. For many years the loco was in BR Blue with large yellow ends outside the Works, but your final photo of the cab (and the photo I saw which was of the entire loco) show it to be in green with a small yellow panel and even the old style D818 under the cab windows. I have never seen a reliable description of why the loco was given an expensive repaint only to be cut up soon after. I know the cutting up was supposed to be a reaction to the closure announcement during the 150 year celebrations, but why the repaint? |
